William West Anderson nació el 19 de setiembre de 1928 en Walla Walla, Washington.
Su padre, Otto West Anderson era agricultor.
Su madre, Audrey V. Speer, pianista, cantante de ópera, concertista, abandonó pronto su carrera artística.
De ascendencia sueca, se trasladó a Seattle cuando tenía 15 años tras el divorcio de sus padres. 
Estudió en la Lakeside High School.
